OBT Music's Tom Phillips finished the score for American Experience's The Feud, set to air on PBS on September 10th at 9pm. The film covers the Hatfield / McCoy feud that grew out of the Civil War and tore the Tug Fork region apart in Appalachia. The score was composed mostly in the Appalachian roots music genre. Raw and guttural with fiddle and acoustic guitar providing much of the impetus to convey the emotion that caused the deadly rift between the two families. The film also extends past the feud as to the economic reason behind the conflict and the result of the industrialists buying up the land and building railroads after coal was discovered beneath the feet of the inhabitants who had lived there for generations as subsistence farmers. An excellent and interesting film.
