OBT's Tom Phillips has just finished scoring the 99 minute long American Experience (PBS) documentary on the life of the great contralto Marian Anderson. The Voice of Freedom will premiere February 15, 2021. As an African American, Marian faced huge hurdles in overcoming prejudice and bias to achieve the heights that she attained. But as Harold Ickes put it introducing her to the audience of 75,000 gathered for her 1939 Easter Sunday Lincoln Memorial concert, "genius knows no color". Arturo Toscanini said a voice like her's only comes along once in a century.
